A Note to AOL, MSN Explorer Users

This post could be very short: We do not support AOL's web browser or email client, or MSN Explorer.

But I would like to explain. We recently had a customer sign up for the Housing Guide that is an AOL user. They use AOL for email and web browsing. As with most AOL users, they did not realize you can minimize AOL and use Internet Explorer or Firefox for web browsing. I am also going to bet that you could use Outlook if you wanted to.

Because of this user, I learned that you need to modify the security settings in Joomla to allow AOL users to login. It has to do with proxy settings with AOL. Of course the better solution would be to just use Internet Explorer, but when people are set in their ways, they keep using the AOL web browser.

Then there is the issue with long URLs in emails in AOL mail. Long URLs, such as the ones used to confirm accounts in both Joomla and Movable Type, get broken into two, three, four lines in AOL. The only solution to this is to copy the URL manually and paste it into your web browser, or forward the email to another email account, like GMail - the URL is not broken, it is AOL email client that mangles the URL. There is nothing I can do to prevent that.

Of course we will not be using Joomla for very long, as the Housing Guide will be up and running in Movable Type soon. And as far as I know, there is no issues logging into a Movable Type site with the AOL web browser. No way to get around that URL mangling thing though.

Please, do yourself a favor: If you are still using AOL to connect to the Internet, just minimize it and use Internet Explorer or Firefox. If you use AOL for email, have it forwarded to a GMail account or something.
