The default archive and entry listing templates are not that great, especially if you are using Monthly, Category, and Author widgets (which we are). However the Mid-Century theme has a great way of listing the archive templates.
The Sports Blog archive page is a good example, it now displays the 100 most recent posts, by date, and then at the bottom displays the Monthly, Category, and Author lists (just like the default template).
For a Monthly, Category, and Author archive, I am displaying the 10 most recent posts in full, followed by a headline listing of the rest. See the January 2009 index, the Men's Hoops index, and Ethan Magoc author index.
